Greetings BIG 6th District –

We are off to a roaring start here in the 6th District. Many awards were received for Past-Commander Anthony Koop and the whole of the 6th District at the Department Convention in Willmar. It sure was great to see old friends and meet new ones.
Our own Dr. Carl Moon was elected as the new Commander for the Department of Minnesota. We even had a controversy or two that made everyone keep on their toes. In the end, we got a lot of good business done.
Less than a week after I write this, we will all be heading off to the National Convention in New Orleans. I’m excited to see what comes out of that convention. Keep an eye on the 6th District webpage, and our Facebook page to keep up on all of the pertinent and recent information.
As in the past, our membership goals this year will be difficult to achieve, especially since we have seen a dues increase. There will be some that say, “I’m not paying that much.” and they will come up with many reasons why they don’t understand why the dues increase was necessary. It is our job to help them see the value of a membership in our beloved The American Legion. Remind them what The American Legion has been responsible for in the past (the creation of the VA, the GI Bill, pushing for the recent legislation for our veterans, and many more). They should also be reminded that if our veteran organizations keep losing membership numbers, Congress and other government officials will be less likely to listen to us. And then who will stand up and speak for our veterans. The American Legion remains the largest veterans organization in the country. WE are the strongest voice for all our veterans, and their families. WE are the ones that they need to pay attention to when it comes to American values. WE are the ones that raised our hands and swore to protect this country, when many of them stayed home and were protected.
And remember to BE THE ONE to save the life of a fellow veteran. BE THE ONE to reach out to a fellow veteran in need and help them get back on their feet. BE THE ONE to offer a light at the end of the dark tunnel for a veteran that may be facing trying times (illness or death of a loved one, their own illness, and many other examples). You don’t need to do it all, or solve all the problems, but you can BE THE ONE to help a fellow veteran get the guidance or assistance they need.
And finally, please remember all of those in our BIG 6th District family that are struggling with health problems. Keep them in your prayers and send them all of the strength and good wishes you can muster.
