Greetings BIG 6th District –

I hope everyone has had a FANTASTIC Summer. The weather sure has cooperated lately. Before I forget, you will see the last two paragraphs in this article every month. That is how strongly I believe in the BE THE ONE program, and how strongly I believe that we all need to share our strength, prayers, and positive thoughts with those struggling.
Since my last writing I have attended many events representing our wonderful 6th District. I’ll try to break down some highlights of them (and hope I don’t forget something or someone):
National Convention in New Orleans.
James A LaCoursiere, Jr. from Connecticut was elected as the new TAL National Commander.
Jim Kellogg from Minnesota was elected as National Vice-Commander for the Central Region
If you get a chance, go out on YouTube and find the speech by Lt. Gen. Russell Honore. What a refreshing, no-nonsense speaker. Lt. Gen. Honore was in charge of relief effort in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
Camporee at Legionville. What a great time we had. And you all would be proud as the BIG 6th District knocked it out of the park. THANK YOU once again to everyone that worked the fish fry on Saturday. As always, a fantastic meal was put on. And it showed by the attendance. Besides that, the entire TAL Family worked together all weekend to put on and wonderful event.
National Security/Foreign Relations kick-off at Camp Ripley. Another great event filled with information and comradery. So very glad I had an opportunity to participate in this event.
And by the time you read this, we will have attended the Harvest Rally at Post 303 in Fridley.
I look forward to visiting many of the Posts around the 6th District in the coming months. I have been invited to many events and meetings, and I’ll try to report back to you the things I have learned from those interactions.
So now the business of The American Legion year truly starts. Here in the BIG 6th District we are busy with membership. And we are doing well (as of this writing we are at 58.82%). The next target goal is 55% by 16-October-2024. Let’s stay ahead of the game and be the example to follow within the Department of Minnesota. And just a suggestion, if you are trying to recruit someone into our ranks and they say “Well, I don’t want to join now because I don’t have time to contribute.” You can answer them by saying, “By signing up you are already contributing. Just by being in our ranks, you are standing with us when we go in front of our legislators!” Remember that numbers matter, that is why it is so important to fill out the reports that come our way. Those numbers are taken to our local, state, and federal government. And the more veterans we have in our ranks, the more those legislators must listen.
And remember to BE THE ONE to save the life of a fellow veteran. BE THE ONE to reach out to a fellow veteran in need and help them get back on their feet. BE THE ONE to offer a light at the end of the dark tunnel for a veteran that may be facing trying times (illness or death of a loved one, their own illness, and many other examples). You don’t need to do it all, or solve all the problems, but you can BE THE ONE to help a fellow veteran get the guidance or assistance they need.
And finally, please remember all of those in our BIG 6th District family that are struggling with personal problems, no matter what those problems may be. Keep them in your prayers and send them all of the strength and good wishes you can muster.

TOGETHER WE CAN
