Greetings BIG 6th District –

Frank Grittner

As we begin this year and the first article of the year, I am going to start off with a challenge for all American Legion members. As I continue to travel the District meeting with Post leaders and Legion Family Members, I ask that you challenge yourselves to review things you do for membership.

Whether it's reviewing outdated pamphlets used for membership drives, follow-up calls, contacting existing and past members, a fleece pullover giveaway, veteran resource event, etc. I look forward to seeing you at District events and especially at your Posts.

Once again, this year I’ll be reminding you of my theme: it's fundraising for Membership and Design, and if there is a part of this we have forgotten, it's the finances that go into everything we do. Without money it's hard for us to do everything we do.

I also ask this year that we ask ourselves “Why should I volunteer?”

As volunteers we work for others. Volunteering is the heart and core of what the American Legion is. We are an organization of like-minded individuals and we want to make a difference and do what's right. It is important to be a volunteer.

Make sure that whatever you’re doing is something you want to do. A volunteer is someone who takes their free time to do something for others. We recognize their play an important part and tell others how appreciative we are of them. Without volunteers, we cannot do all the things we do in our communities for our veterans and their families.

And so, if this is the following year theme, you can answer two-part answer in your own thoughts:

“What do you get out of being a volunteer?” First, you feel accomplished when you volunteer because you're making a difference in your community. Whether it's participating in a fundraiser, providing planning or organizing an event. Just by participating you are contributing, whether you know it or not.

Another part of this year theme followed me this year, that is the second part of my theme.

“Together We Can”. It's an American Legion Family organization, that we can succeed when we pull together as one. This means Post, Auxiliary, SAL, and Riders all working together with our membership goals. We can retain the majority of our members, but we can't increase to our drive and commitment. Let's accomplish TOGETHER as ONE to meet our goals.

And let us move forward with one objective: that is TOGETHER WE CAN DO MORE.
