Greetings BIG 6th District –

And the busy schedule has continued since our last contact. I am happy to say that I was able to make it to the 6th District Junior Conference held in Walker. What a fun time that was. I have also been able to make it to several Post meetings (even made it up to Baudette). I am so grateful for the hospitality my wife and I are shown whenever we get to visit Posts and Units. Unfortunately, several times, Mother Nature has shown us who is still in charge, and we had to cancel some trips due to weather issues. I will do my best to reschedule those visits I was unable to make.
Along with these visits we also had the 106th birthday celebration for The American Legion. What a wonderful time to celebrate all that our members do every day in our communities. From delivering groceries to those folks that can’t get out themselves, to providing Color Guard at school events, and Honor Guards for departed veterans, and all the other things we do. YOU are the heart and soul of The American Legion. Every day YOU are out there showing our communities that our VETERANS are still out there serving. Just because our contracts expired, and we are no longer wearing the uniform, does not mean we are not still out there serving our country and most especially, our communities and fellow veterans.
Once again, the 6th District Oratorical contest winner, Elijah Cox, also won the Department Oratorical contest. I’m sure we will all be rooting for Elijah as he now moves on to compete in the National Oratorical contest. I have no doubt he will make us all proud.
And now we are in an even busier time of year. We have Commander Carl’s testimonial on April 5th, and then a 6th District Executive Board meeting on April 6th. After that is the Veterans Day on the Hill event on April 9. I strongly urge as many people as possible to attend this event. That means, Legionnaires, Auxiliary, S.A.L, AL Riders, and everyone that supports our veterans and what we are fighting for in our state legislature. Along with that are all the officer elections, and reports coming due. Please be sure to get these reports in as soon as possible. I also encourage everyone to send a copy of the Consolidated Post Report (CPR) and Post Officers Report to the 6th District Adjutant. That way if the reports get “lost” in delivery, we can send them without needing to reach out to the Posts again.
I don’t think I need to remind you all to keep working on the membership goals, but I’m going to anyway 😊. I know that this time of year is our slow time, but we must keep pushing forward. We are doing well, but there is always hard work to do. Ask any Post Membership Director and I’m sure they will tell you that they can’t complete their mission alone. TOGETHER WE CAN keep our beloved American Legion strong. Membership is so important because we need to ensure our government listens to us when working through veteran issues. Only through strong membership numbers can we continue to get the attention of our lawmakers (they don’t like it when a large bloc of voters is angry at them).
Please continue to BE THE ONE that checks in on folks you haven’t seen in a while. BE THE ONE that asks hard questions when you see someone struggling or in need. BE THE ONE to show you care enough to go out of your way to help. You never know when you will BE THE ONE to save a life!
I hope to see you as I travel around the BIG 6th District. Stay safe and God Bless!
Until next time remember to BE THE ONE and TOGETHER WE CAN!
